Recycling update
WARREN -- All Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District recycling sites are now accepting No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, glass of all colors, tin and aluminum cans and newspapers and magazines.
A new red container is being placed at each site for newspapers and magazines. The green containers are for plastic, glass and cans.
The number on plastics appears on the bottom of the container in a small triangle.
Classes resume
WARREN -- Devon Elementary School pupils were back in class today after being evacuated Monday.
Jim Russo, business manager for Warren City Schools, said a chemical used to treat the water in the boiler room was swept into a drain, causing an odor throughout the building.
The health and fire departments responded to the school.
Russo said the roughly 200 pupils were evacuated about 9:30 a.m. to First Baptist Church, about three blocks from the school. All district buildings have places designated for evacuation.
Russo said the district installed pipes to carry the fluid into the drain rather than having it swept into the drain.
Lottery winner
WARREN -- Angelo E. Fakkas of Warren won $175,000 in the Dec. 27 Mega Millions drawing, according to the Ohio Lottery Commission.
The winning numbers were 11, 14, 26, 30, 39. He bought his ticket at Jamestown Giant Eagle on Mahoning Avenue N.W. and let the computer pick his winning numbers.
After taxes, he gets $121,625.
Tonight's Mega Millions jackpot is $35 million.
Computer classes
GIRARD -- Computer classes for Girard residents will be offered at Girard High School on Monday evenings from 5 to 6:30 for advanced beginners on PC and 6:30 to 8 for beginners.

Class will be Jan. 27; Feb. 3, 10 and 24; March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31; and April 7.
Athletes for arthritis
NILES -- Joints in Motion will conduct a recruitment meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in the community room of Eastwood Mall.
Joints in Motion is an athletic program for those who want to help raise funds for the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. The group provides training for marathons, triathlons and hikes.
Athletes are being recruited to participate in events in Akron, Cleveland, Hawaii and the Netherlands.

Charges pending
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police plan to file five charges in Mahoning County Juvenile Court against a Choffin Career Center student they say fired a shotgun twice at two narcotics officers Saturday night.
Elvis Cruz, 17, of North Truesdale Avenue, faces charges of felonious assault, aggravated trafficking in cocaine, carrying a concealed weapon for possession of a .32-caliber revolver, possession of a deadly weapon, and illegal possession of a weapon based on a prior conviction.
His brother, Ernie Cruz, 22, also of the Truesdale address, was arraigned Monday in municipal court on two counts each of complicity to felonious assault and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and one count each of possession of a dangerous ordnance and drug abuse marijuana.
Two shotguns and several spent shells were found in the car the brothers were using when they were arrested in the driveway of their home, police said.
Fire damages home
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Springfield Township Fire Chief Steve Rea said it may have been a burning candle or a discarded cigarette that started a fire that did between $30,000 and $40,000 damage to the home of Tom and Kathy Lipnichan of 1848 Butler Pike early today. Rea said smoke alarms saved the Lipnichans, who were sleeping when the fire broke out shortly before 2:30 a.m.
