Adopted a policy for responding to "assaultive and self-destructive behavior" in the schools. Policy committee chairman Clarence N. Boles said the policy means that more teachers and staff will be trained in ways to recognize situations that could become volatile, calm them down and respond with "therapeutic restraint techniques" when necessary. He said the training will first be done at the Choffin Career Center, an alternative school, where there is a time-out room for students with behavior problems.
Boles said no statistics have been kept on assaultive and self-destructive behaviors. The new policy means that teachers and staff will log each time a student in placed in the time-out room and turn the logs in to supervisors four times a year.
Awarded the contracts for telephone and computer equipment at the new Harding and Taft elementary schools to XiTech Corp. of Akron, for $173,400 and $117,500 respectively. While the district had been criticized by another contractor because of the cost, board members supported the recommendation by Genie Natale, the district's manager of educational technology, saying it will be the most economical and efficient system in years to come.
The board also awarded XiTech a $1.2 million contract for electronic equipment at various schools. Federal funding will pay all but $116,000 of the cost.
Adopted a policy that would allow low-income pupils in schools that have been identified in need of improvement to receive tutoring and other supplemental academic enrichment activities. The policy is required by the federal No Child Left Behind legislation.
Re-elected Lock Beachum as president and elected Gerri Sullivan vice president. Sullivan was elected by a vote of 4-3. Boles had nominated Jacqueline Taylor for vice president, who received his vote and her own. Outgoing vice president Tracey S. M. Winbush voted against both candidates.
