NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Shirley Heck is chairwoman of the Springfield Township trustees for 2003. The trustee board also elected Reed Metzka as vice chairman at its reorganization meeting Monday.
Trustees agreed to continue having their regular meetings at 8 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month. Trustees set wages for full-time township employees and also set the mileage reimbursement rate for themselves and the clerk at 36 cents per mile.
West Branch schools
BELOIT -- Larry Romigh was elected president and John Wallace vice president when the West Branch Local Board of Education held its 2003 organizational meeting recently at the high school.
Other members are Terry Criss, Kim Burkhart and Sam Martig.
The board set its meetings for the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the high school. However, the board postponed the regular January meeting until Jan. 30.
Fire at apartment
SHARON, Pa. -- A smoky fire in a Mercer County Housing Authority apartment at 827 Ravine Place routed two people from the structure. Charles Newby Jr., 18, and Jeremiah Norris, 4, were home when the fire broke out around 4:55 p.m. Tuesday but got out safely. Authorities said Newby and Phoebe Norris are the tenants of the apartment.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, but it did start in a second-floor bedroom, firefighters said. Damage was confined to the apartment, firefighters said.
Bridge work delays
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- County officials say maintenance work on four bridges this month will cause some delays and detours in traffic.
Work is expected on the Moravia Road Bridge in North Beaver Township and Hilltown Bridge on Churchill Road in Mahoning Township from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Jan. 14.
Traffic will be allowed over the Moravia Road bridge with some delays, but the Hilltown Bridge will be closed. Work is expected to end by Jan. 17 on both bridges.
There will be some minor delays on the Stoughton Road Bridge in Scott Township from Jan. 16 to Jan. 21. County workers also expect to maintain regular traffic with some minor delays on the McClaine Road Bridge in North Beaver Township when work is done Jan. 20 to Jan. 24.
Teen charged in attack
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested a student at Sharon High School on charges of aggravated and simple assault in an attack on a school administrator. Police were called to the school around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and arrested Jennifer L. McCurdy, 18, of Fairview Road, Fredonia, identified as a student. Police said she is accused of attacking and biting a school administrator.
She was arraigned before District Justice James McMahon, who freed her on her own recognizance. Police wouldn't identify the administrator involved and didn't know why a Fredonia resident would be attending Sharon High School.
Video store robbed
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- An unspecified amount of cash and instant Pennsylvania lottery tickets were taken from the Late Night Video Store on Lawrence Avenue.
Police said someone entered the store sometime between 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Monday and took numerous tickets and money from the cash register.
Door-to-door concerns
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- After receiving complaints about two men on Fairmont and Meyer avenues, Neshannock Township police are warning residents to keep their doors locked and to be wary of strangers.
Police said the men were going door-to-door asking for money to do yardwork or clean leaves from gutters last week. Police said nothing was taken, but they are warning residents to be wary of scams in which people offer to do work for money.
Police said one of the men is described as white, in his 30s, 5 feet 4 inches tall, about 170 pounds with brown, curly hair. The second man was Asian, in his 30s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, about 180 pounds, with short black hair and a dark complexion.
