LOWELLVILLE Stop signs to be installed near school

Traffic has been a concern at the high school.
LOWELLVILLE -- Village council has named William Flora council president and passed emergency legislation to install stop signs at the intersection of Cooper and Rocket Place near the new high school.
Since the school opened Monday, traffic has been a major concern, said Phil Alfano, village administrator. To help rectify the situation, the stop signs will be installed and, within the next two weeks, the state of Ohio will install flashing school-zone lights on Youngstown-Lowellville Road at West Wood Street, warning drivers of the 20-mile-per-hour speed limit, he said.
Village police will also step up efforts to issue traffic citations, said Chief William H. Vance. "We have a lot of kids in that area, plus our senior citizens' high-rise, and people are driving just too erratic."
New ball fields
In other business during Wednesday's meeting, William Slaven, village zoning inspector, announced he will meet with county building inspectors to discuss upgrading deteriorating buildings in the downtown area and Cricket Construction reported on the progress of the construction of the new baseball fields, concession stand and pavilion in the park area near the new school. Cricket is general contractor on the project.
Concrete work and the installation of shingles are slated for completion the week of Jan. 27, Slaven said, while work on the interior of the building will be completed by Feb. 14. Exterior work and completion of the ball fields will depend on weather.
