HELOISE Sanitation is important for good health
Dear Readers: Most children love their pets and sometimes can get just a little too close to them. Some TV commercials show children kissing dogs and vice versa, but that should be avoided, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Sanitation is very important for good health for both people and pets.
Wash pet dishes with hot water and soap after each feeding. Don't keep them on the floor with leftover food in them because if there are small children in the home, they might eat the pet food. Also, when handling pets or their dishes, toys or litter box (Caution: Pregnant women should not handle a litter box), wash hands thoroughly with soap and hot water. There are excellent hand sanitizers you can keep with you that are perfect anytime you are away from a sink and need to clean your hands.
Take a little time to check around your house to make it safe for every member of your family and also your beloved pets. Heloise
Dear Readers: This column is my Heloise Pet column, one of the six daily columns I write. Your paper may run it as is, edit it or put parts of other columns with it. I'd love to see a tear sheet (the whole page that includes the newspaper name and the date) of how your paper runs it. If you send me one and a legal-size self-addressed, stamped (37 cents) envelope, I'll send you a Heloise hints flier. The address is: Heloise/T.S., P.O. Box 795000, San Antonio, Texas 78279-5000. Dear Readers: Pat Confer of Hereford, Texas, sent in a photo of her kitten, Kit-Kat, poking his head out of the back of her husband's favorite C.S.U. hat. She says that the kitten walks while pulling the hat behind him like a little turtle, which he certainly looks like, especially since the hat is green.
Visit my Web site, www.Hel-oise.com, to see cute little Kit-Kat. Heloise
Dear Readers: Panda bears are found in the mountains of central China. Besides not looking like the ordinary bear, their sleeping habits are also different -- they don't hibernate in the winter. Their favorite food is bamboo stalks, and since they have elongated, enlarged wrist bones that actually work like thumbs, gripping the bamboo is easy for them. Heloise
Dear Heloise: A while ago, I read about putting children's artwork behind an aquarium tank to display it. I think it was paintings of fish, etc. I tried something different that looks quite nice, too.
I have a 10-gallon aquarium that I wanted to spruce up. I had a narrow, plastic-framed mirror that was just about the same height and width of the tank. I used double-stick tape on the four corners to adhere it to the outside-back of the aquarium. When the top light is on, the reflection of the fish and plants in the mirror looks beautiful.
