YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team played pretty ugly Monday night, but coach John Robic couldn't have been any happier following the Penguins' 66-60 victory over Wright State.
Before 1,790 at Beeghly Center, the Penguins (6-8) evened their Horizon League record at 2-2. Wright State fell to 7-7, 1-3.
"It was another ugly win, but we'll take it," said Robic. "We shot 38 percent, had 16 turnovers and missed too many free throws, but that's the way we're going to have to win this year."
The Penguins used the hot hand of sophomore Doug Underwood early in the game, then managed to make enough free throws at the end to pull out the victory. YSU finished 14-for-25 at the foul line.
Top efforts
Underwood finished with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. He was joined in double figures by Adam Baumann with 13 and Marlon Williamson with 11. Baumann also pulled down 14 rebounds, while Williamson had eight assists and five steals.
"Doug hadn't been shooting the ball that well recently, but tonight he got into a zone," Robic said. "He had a great shoot-around this morning and I always said hard work pays off."
"I got hot early in the game and the coach kept telling us to get me the rock," said Underwood. "We still missed a lot of easy shots and if we had made our free throws we would have put them away early."
Robic was pleased with the team's defense, except, "I was disappointed the way we defended in the final minute; we gave them four or five easy baskets down the stretch.
"I thought Brian Radakovich did an outstanding job against their top scorer, Seth Doliboa."
Doliboa, whose 23 points per game led the Horizon League, was held to 12 by Radakovich on 5-for-22 shooting. He missed all eight 3-point shots.
Vernard Hollins scored a game-high 27 points for the Raiders.
"We felt that we had to shut down one of their scorers," said Robic.
Wright State led 14-9 in the first 10 minutes of the game, but then Underwood took over. He made two straight 3-pointers to put the Penguins in the lead for the first time, 15-14, then scored seven of the team's next 10 points, as YSU jumped ahead 26-21. The Penguins led 30-23 at halftime.
Leads threatened
Wright State quickly cut YSU's lead to 32-28, but again Underwood got hot, scoring six of the Penguins' next eight points, the final two on a fast break dunk that gave YSU a 40-30 lead.
The Penguins built the lead to 13 (45-32) on a three-point play by Williamson, but Wright State began a rally. The Raiders got to within 54-52 with 2:32 remaining, but Williamson scored on a driving layup, Radakovich sank a 3-pointer and a Williamson free throw put the Penguins ahead 60-52.
The Penguins' last seven points of the game came at the foul line.
YSU has played four games in seven days and Robic said the team is tired.
"We're all tired and we'll probably take a couple days off before getting ready for Butler," he said.
The Penguins travel to Butler Saturday at 2 p.m. They return home Jan. 23 to meet Detroit in the first of three straight home games.
