Council voids eligibility list for vacant post

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The eligibility list for a full-time police officer's position has been voided by borough council.
Members authorized the borough civil service commission to conduct another civil service test and interview more applicants.
The decision was made when council met recently in special session. The commission certified three police officers for the vacant post. One accepted a position elsewhere, and council declined to hire either of the other two.
The post has been vacant since the firing of former patrolman Timothy Chambers, who pleaded guilty to burglary in 2001 after specially installed surveillance cameras caught him stealing from the borough office petty cash drawer several times.
At its reorganizational meeting Monday, council presented a plaque to Richard Hanna, retired police chief, in appreciation for his 21 years of service.
Council also named Shari McMillan and Gary Lilly to the borough zoning hearing board for five-year terms. McMillan is a regular member, and Lilly is an alternate. They replace Nancy Behm and Allen Johnston, who resigned.
Council will have a special meeting at 2 p.m. Jan. 30 to open bids for reconstruction of the borough's cable television system.
