LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Katie Hnida became the first woman to play in a Division I-A football game when she attempted an extra point following a New Mexico touchdown, but UCLA rallied to give fill-in coach Ed Kezirian a 27-13 victory Wednesday.
Hnida, with her blond hair in a ponytail, had her kick blocked following New Mexico's first touchdown.
UCLA (8-5) got second half touchdowns on Craig Bragg's 74-yard punt return and Jarrad Page's interception to beat New Mexico, making just its second bowl appearance in 41 years.
UCLA played under Kezirian, who took over the team after Bob Toledo was fired at the end of the regular season. The school replaced Toledo with Karl Dorrell, the wide receivers coach for the Denver Broncos, but Dorrell has not yet taken over the team.
Tulane 36, Hawaii 28
HONOLULU (AP) -- Lynaris Elpheage returned one punt for a touchdown and set up the go-ahead score to lead Tulane over Hawaii in the inaugural Hawaii Bowl.
Trailing 14-6 in the third quarter, Elpheage scored Tulane's first TD with a 60-yard return.
Elpheage ran back Hawaii's next punt 56 yards, giving Tulane the ball at the Hawaii 17. That set up the go-ahead touchdown, a 1-yard run by J.P. Losman. Elpheage was voted the game's outstanding player after returning four punts for 143 yards.
The Green Wave (8-5) came in as a double-digit underdog but threatened to turn the game into a rout when Mewelde Moore scooted 25 yards late in the third period to make it 26-14.
Hawaii (10-4) rallied behind Shawn Withy-Allen, who filled in for injured quarterback Timmy Chang.
