"There's a silver lining. Our defense had a chance to win a game on their last drive and they did it."
Four times this season, including a 23-20 overtime victory over the Raiders last week, the 49ers (7-2) have ground out time-consuming drives for either the decisive score or to protect leads, leaving their defensive teammates on the sideline as spectators.
"It's just a decision you gotta make right there," Mariucci said afterward. "I'm thinking, if we throw and it's incomplete, they've got the ball with 2:45 left and another timeout."
Linebacker Jeff Ulbrich and running back Paul Smith agreed to contract extensions with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.
Ulbrich, a third-year pro in his second season as a starter, signed a four-year, $5.1 million extension that keeps him with the team until 2006. He made 92 tackles last season, and he has come back strong this fall from a knee injury during training camp.
"There are some games you'll win on the last play, some that are blowouts, and some you just have to grind out," he said. "And at some point, we were going to have to have our defense win one for us. You'd like it the other way, with you having the ball, but they were going to have to win one for us sooner or later."
