Suspect's car found
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood owned by George Ware IV, a murder suspect on the run, was found Sunday morning on Gaither Avenue near Erie Street on the South Side. Ware is accused of shooting Suzanne M. Dalton in Columbus on Dec. 8, dumping her body into a 1999 Lincoln Town Car, driving it here and setting it on fire behind a vacant East Side bar. Ware, 27, who has addresses in Youngstown and Columbus, is charged with aggravated murder. He bought the Cadillac at a Wick Avenue car lot. Police found the car abandoned, with its radio, hub caps, back fender skirts and chrome missing.
Purse stolen from home
SALEM -- A woman in the 500 block of Highland Avenue told police someone stole her purse from her home. She told police Sunday afternoon that her purse had been taken sometime Friday or Saturday.
Car is vandalized
SALEM -- Vandals spray-painted the side of a car parked along the street in the 500 block of East 8th Street between midnight and noon Sunday, police said this morning.
Robbery attempt fails
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A customer scared off a robber at the Fast Check Food Mart on East Washington Street. Police said a man, described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a thin build, wearing a yellow ski mask and matching sweat shirt, grabbed the clerk and demanded money at about 10 p.m. Saturday. He told the clerk he had a gun. Another customer walked in as the clerk was trying to open the cash register and the robber ran off empty handed, police said.
Indecent assault charge
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested Gregory P. Hoovler, 25, of South Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage, on charges of indecent assault, corruption of minors and indecent exposure. Hoovler was picked up on a warrant while attending a sporting event at Sharon High School at 7 p.m. Saturday when an officer working at the event recognized him. Police said he is accused of having indecent contact with a 4-year-old girl at a home in the 200 block of Oak Way on Nov. 28 and 30. He was arraigned before District Justice William Fagley and remained in Mercer County Jail today on $25,000 bond.
Financial aid workshop
CHAMPION -- A financial aid workshop for parents is planned for 7 p.m. Jan. 15 in the Champion High School media center.
The workshop will focus on procedures for applying for scholarships and other forms of financial aid for all colleges.
Computer class
LORDSTOWN -- The Trumbull Career and Technical Center's adult training center in Lordstown is offering its comprehensive computer course beginning Jan. 13. Class meets from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday for seven weeks.
Students will learn Windows, Word, Excel, Internet use, and power-point.
Cost is $575, which includes a 500-page book to take home for reference. Funding is available for displaced workers seeking career enhancement or retraining. For more information, call Terry at (330) 824-2060.
House burglarized
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police reported that a burglar entered a home in the 1000 block of Sciota Street through the back door Sunday, then made off with four packages of frozen food and a compact disc player.
No hold on mayo
BIG BEAVER, Pa. (AP) -- Two boxcars full of mayonnaise were part of a 33-car train derailment Sunday, and thousands of jars of mayonnaise spilled onto the tracks.
Other boxcars containing corn kernels and plastic pellets also lost their loads, as did a tanker filled with molasses.
It was not clear why the cars derailed. Officials said the tracks weren't expected to be reopened until sometime today.
