HUBBARD -- Lynle Cornell scored 27 points and Jami Duvall added 17 as the Hubbard High School girls basketball team kept Warren Harding winless on the season with a 73-49 victory at the Hubbard Gymnasium Thursday.
The Lady Eagles won for the eighth time in their last nine outings, improving to 9-2 overall while the Raiders remained winless in nine outings on the season.
"We expect Lynle Cornell to score and tonight she did just that," Lady Eagle head coach David Konczal said. "She had a career night, her performance setting the tone for us offensively on the night."
Teammate's role
Duvall's two buckets from beyond the arc at the outset of the game gave the Eagles an early 11-2 lead. Her nine points in the quarter helped the Eagles to a 23-16 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
"Jami Duvall, on the other hand, is the one we look to in order for us to get going," Konczal said. "Tonight, she ran our offense perfectly."
When Tasha Davis hit a lay-up at the 6:10 mark of the second quarter, it cut the Hubbard lead to 30-23.
But Cornell took matters into her own hands, scoring 11 of her game-high 27 points in the second period as the Eagles went on a 15-0 run to end the quarter, taking a 45-23 lead into the locker room at intermission.
"You cannot go as long as we did tonight without scoring and expect to win," Raiders coach David Jenkins said. "We knew that Hubbard had a decided height advantage, but their three-point shooting really hurt us tonight."
Sharina Freeman, who had 21 points for the Raiders, hit a bucket in the lane for Harding at the 5:12 mark of the third period to break a 19-0 run by Hubbard.
Putting it away
The Eagles then outscored Warren Harding 14-9 in the period to take a commanding 59-32 lead into the final quarter of action.
Warren's Desirae Jenkins had 10 points in the final period to key a 17-14 Raider run, but it was too little too late as Hubbard coasted to its 24-point victory.
Hubbard was 26 of 56 from the field, canning a season high nine buckets from beyond the arc.
They held a 43-39 rebound advantage as well.
The Raiders were 21 of 57 from the field and 4 of 13 from three-point range. Freeman had five assists and five steals for Warren.
