BOYS BASKETBALL Quakers end MAC losing streak



Salem's 49-47 win over Struthers was its first in the league since Feb., 2001.
SALEM -- For the first time in nearly two years, the Salem High School boys basketball team knows what a Metro Athletic Conference victory feels like.
The Quakers beat Struthers 49-47 Thursday.
Zac Grey went 9-for-12 from the foul line and scored 19 points for the Quakers (3-4, 1-1) who last won a league game on Feb. 6, 2001.
Derek Frederick also scored 11 points while Joe Smith collected 10 points and 15 rebounds for Salem.
D.J. Aldish scored 14 points and Mike Duponty had 11 for the Wildcats (2-6).
Springfield 80, Mathews 23
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield almost outscored the entire Mathews team in the first quarter as the Tigers rolled to their third straight Inter-County League victory.
Jeff Mershimer led the Tigers with 14 points while Dan Schuler added 13 and Dave Rispinto 10. The Tigers are now 6-1, 3-0 ICL.
Mathews, which went scoreless in the entire third quarter, was led by Anthony Jones with nine points. The Mustangs are now 2-4, 1-1 ICL.
Sebring 67, Crestview 42
EAST FAIRFIELD -- Greg VanKirk made six 3-pointers and scored 23 points for the Trojans.
VanKirk hit 11 points in a 20-point second quarter which pushed the Trojans into a 42-22 lead at the break.
David Scarpitti and Andrew Wilson each had 12 points for Sebring (7-1, 3-0 Tri-County League).
Nick Huff scored 14 points for the Rebels (4-4, 2-1).
Canton Heritage 74Youngstown Christian 59
AUSTINTOWN -- Phil Johnson scored 20 points, Chris Cook 19 and John Timmer 16 for Heritage Christian (5-4), which made 21 for 24 at the foul line to overcome a 21-goal stalemate from the field at the Highway Tabernacle Gym.
Mike Vitullo had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead Youngstown Christian (4-5), while Mike Byrdy added 15 points, Themi Tsarnas 10 and Chris Suszczynski eight.
