Interim treasurer job still available

One option available to the school district would be to hire another district's treasurer part time.

SALEM -- The city school district ended the year without an interim treasurer.
The school board met privately earlier this week to consider three candidates for the treasurer post vacated by Ted Cougras.
After interviewing the prospects, school board members said they wanted more time to consider the matter, Superintendent Dr. David Brobeck recently explained.
School officials are not identifying the candidates. They have not submitted any applications, r & eacute;sum & eacute;s or other documents detailing their interest in the job, Brobeck said.
He has been serving as temporary treasurer since Dec. 22.
He said the temporary job, however, is preventing him from concentrating fully on his superintendent duties, intensifying the need to choose someone on an interim basis.
One option available if an interim is not named soon would be to contract with another district to use its treasurer part time, Brobeck said.
Here's the situation
Once the interim treasurer situation is solved, the school board expects to turn its attention more fully to hiring a permanent treasurer.
So far, the only public expression of interest in the job has been from Robert Tullis, the city's treasurer.
No time frame has been established for how soon the district will hire a new treasurer.
Cougras abruptly resigned his $72,237-a-year job Dec. 16 after a Dec. 13 visit to school administration offices by representatives of the Columbiana County prosecutor's office.
The officials seized documents that they said were related to Cougras' March purchase of $781 in office equipment, which he had delivered to his Poland home.
The items, an office chair and mats, were paid for with a school district check.
Cougras reimbursed the district for the buy, after school officials learned of it Dec. 5.
Cougras has not been charged with or accused of any crime.
County Prosecutor Robert Herron said earlier this week that the investigation launched by this office is continuing.
