AUSTINTOWN -- Rebecca Holt of Fitch High School has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. She is the daughter of James and Patricia Holt.
The society honors outstanding high school students for superior academic achievement. Students are selected for the Georgia-based society on a limited basis, by invitation only.
Poetry contest
CORTLAND -- The Warren Junior Women's League with the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs' Arts Committee is sponsoring a poetry contest for seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade pupils. Deadline is next Saturday, and poems will be judged on creativity, content and presentation.
Each poet may submit one original poem between eight and 30 lines, typed double-spaced with minimum 1-inch margins on 81/2-inch by 11-inch paper. Entries should be sent to Renee Maiorca, Warren Junior Women's League, 2202 Niles Cortland Road, Cortland, OH 44410. Poets should include their name, grade, school, school address and English teacher's name on a separate sheet of paper.

Pizza Joe's art contest
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pizza Joe's invites community members to vote on 12 entries in the "Creating My Future Community" high school art contest. Students in Pennsylvania and Ohio have used graphics and freehand to illustrate their ideas, hopes and dreams of their future communities, including social, economic and political possibilities.
Vote online at www.pizzajoes.com through Jan. 31. One finalist from each school will be chosen, and finalists will be judged by a panel in February. Winners receive scholarships and other prizes.
Thiel appointments
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Jeffrey S. Taylor and William J. Beil have been appointed interim associate vice presidents at Thiel College. Taylor, who had been the college's controller since 1992 and resides in Greenville, has become interim associate vice president for finance.
Beil, who had been the college's director of information technology since 1999 and resides in Jamestown, has become interim associate vice president for business. Both occupy positions created in response to the resignation of Richard Rugen, vice president for administrative services, who will become vice president of administration and finance at Bloomsburg University.
Seminar on prejudice
ADA -- Jane Elliott, adapter of the "Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes" sensitizing experiment, will hold a free seminar on "The Anatomy of Prejudice" at the Ohio Northern University Freed Center for the Performing Arts from 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 20. The event will focus on racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia and ethnocentrism. A complimentary dinner discussion follows the seminar for the first 250 arrivals.

Human resource program
CANTON -- Kent State University Stark Campus, in cooperation with the Society for Human Resource Management, is offering a five-session, 30-hour program to prepare human resource professionals for certification examinations. Topics covered will include strategic management, human resource development, compensation and benefits, staffing and work-force planning and employment.
The program will be held weekly Feb. 1 through March 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Professional Education and Conference Center off University Drive at the KSU campus in Jackson Township. Arizona teacher of year
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Austintown native Rich Mayorga, a 1977 Fitch High School graduate, has been named the 2003 Arizona Teacher of the Year by the Arizona Educational Foundation. He was awarded a plaque and $20,000, which he donated to a student scholarship fund.
Mayorga teaches history, government, social studies and Spanish at Sunnyside High School in Tucson. He also developed an honors academy at the school and coaches track and football. He is the son of Helen Mayorga of Austintown and the late Fred Mayorga.
Doctoral programs
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Doctor of pharmacy and doctor of osteopathic medicine programs are now available to Slippery Rock University students, through an agreement between SRU and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
The programs will enable Slippery Rock biology, allied health, exercise science and chemistry students to transfer to the college for advanced degrees while earning a bachelor's degree at SRU. They will be able to transfer to the pharmacy program in two years and into medical school after three.
Earlier this year, SRU entered an agreement with Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis that allows students to earn a doctor of chiropractic degree in six years.
Engineering scholarships
COLUMBUS -- The Engineers Foundation of Ohio is offering $25,000 in scholarships to top engineering students for the 2003-2004 academic year. An extended deadline application is Feb. 14.
Applicants must be American citizens, permanent residents of Ohio, have an SAT of 600 math/500 verbal or ACT of 29 math/25 English, and a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. They must be graduating high school seniors who have been admitted to an accredited engineering program in Ohio or at Notre Dame. Other scholarships are available to college students.
