Accessories make personalizing fashions fun

Following the stars became the fashionable way to go in 2002.

These fashions in accessories, hair, clothes, models and other trends of 2002 added to the fun of the year:
Women went berserk for YSL's hobo bag, which sold out in one day in Paris and London.
Winona Ryder tried to make little-girl headbands look innocent while she was on trial for shoplifting.
Teen pop star Avril Lavigne had girls and women alike raiding men's closets for neckties.
Anna Nicole Smith led the little-dog-as-accessory charge with her beloved Sugar Pie, while others -- from Natalie Portman to Reese Witherspoon's "Legally Blonde" character Elle Woods -- carried pooches in their purses.
Shoes were either high-heeled and spiky or flat with pointy toes. Marc Jacobs brought back the round toe, while Gucci and Chanel added ribbon laces to their sexy stilettos.
The winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City saw the birth of two hot trends. U.S. speedskating star Apolo Anton Ohno served as pitchman in ads for high-performance Nike Mojo sunglasses.
Big was definitely better when it came to jewelry. Tiny stud earrings were passed over for long, thin, dangling ones, or beaded chandelier styles.
The stone of the year was turquoise -- earrings, belts, necklaces, bracelets and handbags all took on a Southwestern feel.
Jennifer Lopez set off a huge increase in the sale of pink diamonds after Ben Affleck proposed with a pink diamond solitaire he had custom-made by Harry Winston.
Hair today
The hair color of the year was pink -- Kelly Osbourne did it on "The Osbournes"; Jennifer Garner did it on "Alias"; Nikki McKibbin did it on "American Idol"; pop princess Pink did it mixed with platinum blond in concert halls across the country.
Afros made a comeback -- on Justin Guarini of "American Idol"; on Beyonce Knowles' Foxy Cleopatra in "Austin Powers"; on Whitney Houston on a recent "Today" show appearance.
For men, the most popular hair style was the faux-hawk, short, with some length on top that was gelled and spiked into a mohawk-like peak.
"Today" show host Matt Lauer showed up to work with a super-shorn military hairstyle that had viewers split down the middle on its merits.
Meanwhile, several actors sported mounds of facial hair. Brad Pitt somehow managed to remain sexy amid the scruffiness. Antonio Banderas, Tom Cruise, Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe all left their razors at home.
Then there were those with no hair at all. Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum goes bald to play Lex Luthor; Vin Diesel kept his head shaved for "XXX"; Mathew St. Patrick was hairless on "Six Feet Under"; and "The Shield" star Michael Chiklis went smooth as a cue ball -- and took home a best-actor Emmy in the process.
In style
Spring fashion trends included all shades of white, ruffles, lots of florals, Western duds, the prairie look and lots of folkloric, bohemian styles.
Fall fashion trends included the romantic (ruffles, ribbons and ruches); playful prints (geometrics, stripes, paislies) and metallics Also popular were chunky knits, cropped pants, slim pants, cargo pants, the military look, shearling coats, pea coats, corduroy and dresses worn over jeans.
Flashdance-style slouch boots worn with pants tucked in; Flashdance-style cutoff sweatshirts and T-shirts; wide belts worn backward; newsboy caps; shrunken blazers; long, skinny scarves paired with tank tops; and dresses over jeans.
The model du jour at fashion weeks the world over was hot young Russian Natalia Vodianova. The underage beauty hit the catwalk at all the major shows.
The tan was back in full force -- think Donatella Versace, Jennifer Lopez, Donna Karan. But this year, people finally started to listen up to all the skin-care warnings and lined up for instant, spray-on sunless tans.
Low-rise jeans went really, really, really low this year. Championed by the likes of Britney Spears, peeping thongs became fashion statements.
Pregnancy became fashionable with mom's like Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Moss, Cynthia Nixon, Elizabeth Hurley and Posh Spice giving birth this year.
Hollywood leading man Tom Cruise flashed his million-dollar smile with pride this year, even though those pearly white teeth were covered with braces.
