Ten win openers at state tourney
Several athletes from the area won their consolation matches.

COLUMBUS -- Ten of the 24 area athletes who advanced to the state meet won their first-round match during the first day of the OHSAA wrestling championships.
In the preliminaries of Division I, at 135 pounds, Joe Murray of Austintown Fitch decisioned Alec Bottomlee of Elyria 3-1, while at 160 pounds, Brandon Alexander of Howland decisioned Jon Mathias of Worthington Kilbourne 8-7.
Eric Chine of Fitch recorded a major decision over Brent Saunders of Grove City, 13-5, at 171.
Six Div. II wrestlers, including three at 215 pounds, won their opening contests.
Klynt Maston of Canfield pinned Tim Neill of Vincent Warren at 5 minutes, 17 seconds at 130 pounds.
At 171, Jordan Williams of Beaver Local decisioned Andy Brennan of Dayton Chaminade-Julienne 4-2.
Adam Hoppel wins
The trio of winners at 215 were Brad Lanham of Southeast, who pinned Joey Ellwood of Gnadenhutten Indian Valley in 2:49; Josh Stansbury of East Liverpool, who pinned Rudy Radva of Parma Normandy in 1:36, and Adam Hoppel of Beaver Local, who pinned Nick Aliff of Jefferson Area in 2:34.
At 275, Seth Sharp of West Branch pinned Chad Ellis of Vermilion in 3:35.
Kyle Kemble of Jackson-Milton was a first-round winner at 103 pounds in Div III. He decisioned Shane Porter of Spencerville, 12-6.
Three wrestlers fell in their Div. I openers. At 119, Brent Goode of Cincinnati Moeller pinned Nick Bodnar of Fitch in 3:47. T.J. Enright of Galloway Westland pinned A.J. Lamp of Howland in 1:34 at 130, and Ryan Lang of Lakewood St. Edward posted a technical fall over Anthony Prvonozac of Howland, 21-6, at 135.
Ten Div. II wrestlers lost setbacks in their initial match.
Adam Kriwinsky (Hunting Valley University School) won a major decision over Anthony Duffield of East Liverpool, 15-4, at 103. At 112, Quentin Keyes (Walsh Jesuit) decisioned Jacob Bartley (Southeast) 10-4, while at 119, Nate Browning (Bellbrook) won a technical fall over Salem's Sonn Hostetter, 16-1.
Grant Hoppel, Beaver Local's 130-pounder, suffered a 15-0 technical fall to Jonas England of Aurora, and at 140, Steve Krawczyk of Medina Buckeye was an 8-6 winner over Jared Hoppel of Beaver Local.
Brenner splits
Both local wrestlers at 152 pounds lost. Kent Smith (Pemberville Eastwood) decisioned Bob Brenner of Canfield, 9-7, and Ryan Rhoades (Bellefontaine) decisioned Jeremy Shaw (Beaver Local), 5-2.
At 171, Joe Dennis (St. Paris Graham) chalked up a 15-6 major decision over Chris Green of East Liverpool.
At 189, Brad Osborn (Germantown Valley View) decisioned Jarek Esarco (Canfield) 3-1 and Leo Saniuk (Copley) decisioned Jared Williams (Beaver Local) 7-0.
At 189 pounds in Div. III, Scott Smith of Gahanna Columbus Academy decisioned Bobby Poweski of Warren JFK, 9-5.
Bodnar, Prvonozac, Duffield, Bartley, Brenner, Esarco, Jared Williams and Poweski won consolation matches and were to continue in action today.
