NEW WILMINGTON Board to appeal request

NEW WILMINGTON -- The Wilmington Area School Board has agreed to join with Pulaski Township to appeal a request for a property tax reduction by the New Castle School of Trades.
According to Board Solicitor Charles Mansell, trade school property was assessed at approximately $900,000. Trade school officials say that that the property should be valued at only $450,000.
If Lawrence County officials grant that reduction, it would mean the loss of about $44,325 a year in taxes to the school district, officials said.
In joining with Pulaski, the board agreed to share costs of the appeal, not to exceed $3,000.
In other action at its meeting Monday, the board hired coaches for the newly formed girls varsity softball team. Tina McKelvey of New Brighton, Pa., will be head coach at a salary of $1,700 per year; Rebecca Rosengarth of New Wilmington and Joanna Wilson of Volant will be assistant coaches at a rate of $650 a year.
Softball player Autumn Long presented the board with a thank-you card for honoring requests made in the fall to make girls fast-pitch softball a school-sponsored sport instead of a club sport
Other sports coaches hired were: Amber Reiber Marett of Volant, head varsity volleyball coach, at an annual salary of $1,700; and Janelle Whiting of Edinburg, junior varsity volleyball coach, at a salary of $1,300.
