Council OKs raises for village workers
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Council has approved 3-percent raises for several village employees.
Eight part-time police officers, two part-time street department workers, the clerk and the mayor's secretary, who also serves as clerk of courts, all received the increases.
The secretary's increase is retroactive to Jan. 1, while the others will receive the increase beginning the next pay period.
Council also appointed Bill Morvay, village police chief, as part-time temporary street commissioner at $200 per month. He will oversee streets until a new village administrator is hired. That post is vacant because of the recent retirement of Robert Mason.
Lawmakers also approved a 10-year lease agreement renewal with Consumers Ohio Water Co. for the village's water tower. Consumers pays $35,000 per year to the village. In the lease renewal, which begins March 1, 2004, that sum remains at $35,000 until 2005 when it will rise to $40,000. It will increase again in 2009 to $45,000 and will remain at that figure until 2014.
Council also named Stacey Gooden to a vacancy on the planning and zoning committee and accepted Fred Ross III as a member of the fire department.
