WARREN -- A man accused of killing a 4-year-old boy wants a lower bond so he can get out of jail.
Michael Ledger and his attorney, James Lewis of the Ohio Public Defender's Commission, asked Judge John Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on Thursday to lower Ledger's bond from $1 million to $100,000.
Ledger was indicted last week and has pleaded innocent to a murder charge. He is accused of killing Logan Guiton.
Lewis noted that the purpose of bond is to ensure that the person appears for all court proceedings. He said his client has children in the area and has lived here for several years.
"He has a home here and he had a job at a local nursing home," Lewis told the judge. "I think he has been in this area for six or seven years."
The judge said he would take the matter under advisement.
Prosecutors could not be reached.
About the case
Police said Logan died Jan. 20 of a severe head injury. Ledger was Logan's legal guardian.
Police said Ledger, who has three other children, including Logan's 6-year-old brother, called 911 around 4:20 a.m. Jan. 18 to say Logan was not breathing.
In a recording of the call, Ledger can be heard telling the dispatcher the boy had been "bad."
The older boy is staying with Ledger's relatives.
Runako Stroud, Logan's mother, said Ledger was granted custody of both her sons. The Youngstown woman said she is now trying to get custody of her 6-year-old.
