BIG TEN Bucks' second string is first rate in victory

COLUMBUS -- Shorthanded Ohio State needed some help off the bench and got it from Emonte Jernigan.
Jernigan scored 21 points as the Buckeyes beat Minnesota 73-68 Wednesday night.
"It was just one of those games where I had my opportunity and I had to hit shots, and I was able to do that tonight," Jernigan said.
Jernigan's biggest shots came early in the second half. He hit three straight 3-pointers over a span of about three minutes to start a run that gave the Buckeyes control.
"He launched a couple," Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien said. "When they go, as a coach, you just sit back down and thank the Lord."
With the score tied at 48 with 13:04 to play, Jernigan made back-to-back 3-pointers to trigger a 16-7 run that gave the Buckeyes (11-9, 4-5 Big Ten) a 64-57 lead with 5:20 to play.
Minnesota pulled to 67-64 with 2:06 to play, but Brent Darby made five free throws in the last 1:53 to help seal the win.
Led by Jernigan, the Ohio State bench outscored the Golden Gophers' (12-7, 4-4 Big Ten) reserves 31-8. Matt Marinchick came off the bench to add 10 points for the Buckeyes.
Maurice Hargrow led Minnesota with 17 points, Michael Bauer had 16, Rick Rickert had 13 and Jerry Holman had 10. Darby had 18 for Ohio State and Williams had 11.
Iowa 75, Penn St. 55
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Chauncey Leslie scored 22 points and Sean Sonderleiter had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Iowa.
Brody Boyd scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half and Glen Worley finished with 10 for Iowa (12-6, 4-3 Big Ten), which went on a 19-2 run to finish the game as Penn State only scored one basket in the final 8:36. Sharif Chambliss had 18 points and DeForrest Riley had 11 points, all in the first half, for Penn State (5-14, 0-8).
Northwestern 74, Indiana 61
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Jitim Young scored 23 and T.J. Parker had 21 as Northwestern beat Indiana for the first time in 15 years.
It was the fourth straight loss for Indiana (14-7, 4-4 Big Ten). Northwestern (9-10, 1-7) snapped a seven-game losing streak with its first Big Ten win.
Young was playing with a dislocated middle finger on his left hand -- there was some question whether he'd even play earlier this week -- but he was 9-of-11 from the floor and snagged 12 rebounds.
Purdue 78, Wisconsin 60
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Willie Deane scored 19 points and Darmetreis Kilgore added 17 as No. 24 Purdue won for the 10th time in its last 11 games.
The Boilermakers (15-4, 7-1 Big Ten) were playing their first game as a ranked team since March 2000 and may have played their best game of the season.
Wisconsin (15-5, 5-3) could have moved into a first-place tie with Purdue in the Big Ten. Instead, the Boilermakers dominated from the opening tip and snapped Wisconsin's five-game winning streak.
