Associate dean at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Ted Bosela, a member of Youngstown State University's engineering technology faculty since 1989, has been appointed associate dean of the Rayen College of Engineering and Technology at YSU.
Bosela has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from YSU, a master's in electrical engineering from the University of Akron and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He was senior electrical engineer at Schneider Engineers Inc. in Bridgeville, Pa., before joining YSU's faculty in 1989. He also has authored the "Introduction to Electrical System Design" textbook.
Half-Time Havoc event
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State University Student Programming Board sponsors the third annual Half-Time Havoc, a sports competition for faculty, staff and students Feb. 15 at Beeghly Center. The competition at half-time of the men's basketball game against the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, will feature a relay race. The basketball game beings at 7 p.m. Registration deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday for teams to participate.
Superintendent's honor
COLUMBUS -- Paul Hood, superintendent of the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, has been named one of eight Technology Leader Superintendents of the Year by the Buckeye Association of School Administrators and the Ohio SchoolNet Commission.
An award plaque was presented to Hood on Feb. 3 during the commission's State Technology Conference at the Columbus Convention Center.
This is the first time the awards have been presented.
Hood received lodging for three nights at a conference hotel and free conference registration.

D.E.A.F. Awards given
COLUMBUS -- Anthony Albani of Youngstown was one of four recipients of a D.E.A.F. Award and laptop computer presented during a "Making a Difference With Your Future" transition workshop held in the fall.
The workshop, for high school students in Ohio who are deaf or hard of hearing, focused on self-awareness, development, career awareness and planning for the future.

Language competition
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- More than 1,000 students from 35 regional high schools in Allegheny, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties will visit Slippery Rock University on Tuesday for a "World Language Competition."
Students will compete for prizes on individual and school levels in Spanish, French, German and Latin. Participating area high schools are Kennedy Catholic, Shenango, Commodore Perry, Slippery Rock, Lakeview Christian Academy, Mercer, Mohawk and Neshannock.
Student entrepreneurs
CLEVELAND -- Undergraduate college students in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana are invited to compete in the Ohio Valley Region 2003 Global Student Entrepreneur Awards. Students must be enrolled with at least 12 credit hours earned in the past year and be a business owner.
Top winners will receive prizes of $2,000, $1,000 and $500. First-place winner advances to a national competition to compete for a $10,000 prize.
Regional sponsors are the Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship at John Carroll University, the William D. Brown General Agency of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, the Harvard Business School Club of Northeastern Ohio and Cohen & amp; Co. Ltd.

Fiction reading planned
YOUNGSTOWN -- Novelist Sarah Willis, author of "Some Things that Stay" and "The Rehearsal," will present a fiction reading at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University. Willis, winner of the Book of the Month Club' Steven Crane Award for First Fiction, makes the presentation as part of YSU's Poetry Center Reading Series.
Kindergarten sign-ups
STRUTHERS -- Kindergarten registration for the Struthers schools will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 18-21 at the Board of Education Office, 99 Euclid Ave. Registration will not be accepted at the elementary school. The child must be 5 years old Sept. 30. Required are birth certificate, immunization record, Social Security number, custody papers if applicable and three proofs of residency.
Western-wear search
VIENNA -- Mathews High School drama department is collecting Western wear for the presentation of "Taming the Wild, Wild West in a Dress," scheduled for 7 p.m. March 21 and 22 at the school.

Art scholarships
YOUNGSTOWN -- The art department of Youngstown State University is accepting applications for the Florence Simon Beecher Talent Scholarships for incoming freshmen. Requirements include a minimum 2.5 high school grade-point average, enrollment as an art major, application, portfolio of original artwork and three references, with one from an art teacher.

Raffle to benefit JFK
WARREN -- John F. Kennedy Catholic High School is sponsoring a raffle as a benefit for academic areas at the school. The winner need not be present for the drawing to be held April 5 for a 2003 PT Cruiser GT.

Seeking sponsorship
POLAND -- Poland Seminary High School junior Sarah Park is seeking sponsorship to help fund costs of her participation in the 11-day National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. Park was selected to represent the school and community in a delegation of Ohioans and must raise $1,799 plus traveling costs, due March 1.
Park plans to attend workshops in the Medicine & amp; Health Care portion of the conference and will be exposed to various legislators and ambassadors. Students from across the United States and world will attend.
Locally, she is involved in various school and community groups and maintains a 3.9 grade point average.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sens. Mike DeWine and George Voinovich, both R-Ohio, have nominated two Youngstown residents and a Canfield resident to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., and a Youngstown resident to the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Nominated to the Naval Academy are John Shaffo and Jason Kelly, both of Youngstown, and Christopher Wright of Canfield. Nominated to West Point is Daniel Mikus of Youngstown. The service academies make their selections for appointment from the list of nominees provided by members of Congress.
AutoCad Release class
CHAMPION -- An AutoCad Release 2002 class, using CAD software, is being offered at Trumbull Career Technical Center for high school juniors or seniors planning a career in engineering. Cultural Homestay International is seeking host families for foreign-exchange students from Europe, Asia and South America.
