Heacock to discussrecruiting class
YOUNGSTOWN -- YSU football coach Jon Heacock will discuss the 2003 recruiting class on a special edition of Penguin Playbook at 6 p.m. tonight on 570 WKBN-AM.
Heacock will also talk about the upcoming spring practices in late March.
Michael earns honors
YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior Kurt Michaelis of Youngstown State was named the Horizon League's Male Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.
Michaelis finished fourth in the 800-meter run (1:50.81) at the Penn State National Open Indoor track and field meet.

Davenport chosen for Melrose HOF
NEW YORK -- Willie Davenport, a Howland High graduate who passed away last June, will be inducted into the Melrose Games Hall of Fame Friday at Madison Square Garden.
Davenport won an Olympic gold medal in 110-meter hurdles in 1968. His son, Willie Jr., will accept the award on his behalf.
"It's going to be very exciting; I'm very pleased that they're honoring my father," Willie Jr. said. "He's greatly missed."
The ceremony will take place during intermission of the games. It is Davenport's first major honor since his death.
Powerade Jam Fest
CLEVELAND -- The Powerade Jam Fest high school basketball competition will take place at Cleveland State on March 24 at 7 p.m.

Malone's Hazenearns running award
CANTON -- Malone College men's and women's cross country coach Jack Hazen earned the Distinguished Service Award at the Ohio Association of Track & amp; Cross Country Coaches Awards Banquet recently.
Hazen has served as cross country coach at Malone for 35 years, including many of those as track & amp; field coach as well.
PAC honors Fadden
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Brian Fadden, a Mohawk High graduate, was named Presidents' Athletic Conference boys basketball player of the week.
Fadden averaged 13 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game last week, leading the Titans to a 2-0 record. He was 8 of 9 from the field and 12 of 12 from the free throw line over that span.
Senior swimmer Stefanie King was named PAC women's swimmer of the week.
Health program set
BOARDMAN -- The Fun-n-Fit Kids program for youth age 8-12 will be held at the Creekside Fitness and Health Club beginning Feb. 15.

AUSTINTOWN -- WBBW 1240's Inside Boxing will host past, present and future of the Youngstown Golden Gloves Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7 at Antonio's Restaurant on Raccoon Rd.
Challenger baseballbegins registration
BOARDMAN -- Little League Challenger baseball, designed for kids ages 5-18 with a mental, learning or physical disability, has begun registration for the summer season.
Registration is open to kids in Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Cost is $15 for the first child and $5 for each additional child, with a maximum cost of $25. Volunteers are welcomed as managers, coaches, buddies, umpires and administrators.
Play begins in June at Fields of Dreams, with one game played each Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday for six weeks. Registration deadlines is May 31. For details, call Jan Seidler at 330-792-9332.

USOC chief resigns under pressure
DENVER -- Marty Mankamyer resigned as president of the U.S. Olympic Committee, succumbing to pressure from colleagues who blamed her for infighting that fractured the world's most powerful Olympic organization.
The USOC's executive committee was expected to take a vote of no confidence this weekend in Chicago after seven of the 22 members asked for her resignation Jan. 21.
Under USOC bylaws, vice president-secretariat William Martin will serve as interim president.
The USOC's board of directors will vote on a permanent replacement after a nomination is made by the executive committee.
No date has been set for an election.
Lions hireMariucci
DETROIT -- Steve Mariucci was hired as coach of the Detroit Lions, taking over one of the NFL's worst teams less than three weeks after his dismissal by the 49ers.
Mariucci, born and raised in Iron Mountain, Mich., signed a contract with the Lions and will be formally introduced at a news conference today.
