Police departments to receive cameras
YOUNGSTOWN -- A digital camera was to be awarded this afternoon in council chambers to the Youngstown Police Department traffic bureau by the Mahoning Safe Communities Program, which sponsored the "You drink and drive, you lose" campaign.
During the holidays, from Nov. 25 through Jan. 5, YPD conducted more than 266 hours of additional enforcement and made 27 DUI arrests, said Lt. Robin Lees, YPD spokesman.
During the campaign, three traffic fatalities were recorded, two of which were alcohol-related, he said.
The Boardman Police Department was also awarded a digital camera for its efforts. Township police worked more than 162 extra hours of enforcement and made six DUI arrests.
Boardman Capt. Jerre Patterson said 13 percent fewer crashes were recorded during the period when compared to the year before.
In all, local police departments worked a total of 493 extra hours and made 57 arrests.
