In an effort to help drivers stay alert, the Ohio Turnpike Commission, with the support of restaurant operators, continues a long-standing New Year's Eve tradition of offering free coffee at all its service plazas.
Motorists traveling the turnpike can receive complimentary coffee from 10 p.m. today through 7 a.m. Thursday.
Restaurant operators participating in the program are McDonald's, HMS Host, Compass Group and Hardee's.
All available Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers will be out today and Thursday, and the turnpike commission will have maintenance crews and toll collectors on the lookout for dangerous driving behavior.

YOUNGSTOWN -- With four newly elected members, the board of education will conduct its organizational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 13 at board headquarters at 20 W. Wood St., followed by a caucus at 6 p.m. and the regular board meeting at 7 p.m.
Board member Michael Write will be sworn in at 5 p.m. that day at board headquarters.
The other three new board members will be sworn in as follows: Shelley Murray, 5:15 p.m. today at 47 Federal Plaza East at the First Night Youngstown celebration; Kathryn Hawks Haney, 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Temple Emmanuel Seventh-day Adventist Church, 108 W. Indianola Ave.; and Jamael Tito Brown, 6 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Rayen-Wilson basketball game at The Rayen School.
