BOYS BASKETBALL Stoops' long shot at buzzer nets Mooney 52-49 win over Wilson



Mooney survived a strong test by Wilson to register its fifth triumph.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ron Stoops hit a long 3-point shot at the buzzer Tuesday to give the Cardinal Mooney High boys basketball team a 52-49 victory over Woodrow Wilson.
Stoops finished with 15 points for the Cardinals (5-1), while Dave Zidian led the team with 16 points and Jeff Hehr added 10.
Wilson (I-4), which led 43-37 after three periods, was paced by Chauncey Whitlow and Bruce Smith with 15 points each.
East Liverpool 64, Boardman 55
BOARDMAN -- Scott Scales scored 12 of his 27 points in the final quarter for the Potters (4-3).
East Liverpool hit four 3-pointers -- all in the first quarter -- and took a 22-13 lead after eight minutes.
Brian Kreefer added 15 points and six rebounds.
Mike DeOnofrio led the Spartans (2-4) with 22 points, three rebounds, four assists and five steals. He made four 3-pointers.
Jay Davis was in with 21 points and five rebounds, while Chris Wire tacked on six rebounds and five steals.
Campbell 61, Wellsville 51
CAMPBELL -- Campbell broke open a close contest in the final quarter to roll past Wellsville.
The Red Devils (5-3) outscored Wellsville 23-16 in the final period and were led by Louie Samonas with 17 points, while James Torbert added 14 and Chris Melnik chipped in with 11.
Wellsville (3-3) was paced by Bill McNicol with 19 points.
Southern 64, Lowellville 34
LOWELLVILLE -- Josh Diaz led the Indians (5-1) with 18 points, while Aaron Blatch supported the attack with 10 points.
Southern led 25-15 at the break, then held the Rockets (0-5) to just five points in the third quarter.
Freshman point guard Mario Nero scored 10 points for Lowellville.
Louisville 60, West Branch 36
BELOIT -- Pat Welden scored 19 points and Luke Conley added 12 points for Louisville (3-4, 2-2 Northeastern Buckeye Conference).
Nate Greenawalt led the Warriors (2-6, 2-3 NBC) with 11 points.
Grand Valley 85, Bloomfield 25
ORWELL -- J.P. Leida scored 18 points for the Mustangs (3-4), who opened the season 1-4.
Jason Headley added 13 points, John Better had 12 points and eight assists, while Don Marsh came up with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Josh Mobley scored 10 points for the Cardinals (1-5).
Grove City 66, Farrell 62
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Ryan King tossed in 22 points and Grove City hit 25-of-33 free throws to lead the Eagles past Farrell.
Mike Johnson added 15 points and Kevin Persh hit for 12 as Grove City improved to 9-2.
Farrell (5-6) was led by Clarence Clay with 15 points, while Kellen Newby added 13.
Canton Timken 84, Chaney 48
