COLUMBIANA CO. Teen-ager faces charges in scuffle with police officer
The boy was cut by a machete and shot.
LISBON -- Charges have been filed in Columbiana County Juvenile Court against a 17-year-old boy shot and cut in a scuffle last week with a Salineville police officer.
The boy, whose identity isn't being released by authorities, is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, aggravated menacing and resisting arrest, Chief Michael Abraham said this morning.
The boy also is charged with using a gun in the crimes. He was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital after the event. Abraham said he didn't know the youth's condition.
Abraham said he has yet to decide whether his department acted correctly in handling the episode, which occurred around 8 p.m. Christmas Eve.
The part-time officer involved, Patrolman Dwayne Martin, remains on administrative leave, Abraham said.
Police were called to investigate a car reported taken from Ramona Miller's home on West Main Street in Salineville.
Martin spotted the car and followed it to Miller's house. He identified the driver as Miller's grandson.
When Martin confronted the boy, the teen threatened the officer with a machete, and a scuffle ensued.
While the two wrestled, the boy was shot with Martin's handgun. The boy also managed to cut his own throat with the machete, police have said. Abraham said no motive for the boy's actions has been determined.
