We need to retrain ourselves to buy American products
We need to retrain ourselvesto buy American products
EDITOR:
I continue to be amazed at the shopping habits and acquiescence of members of our labor unions. They flock to the Wal-Marts and Home Depots in droves. Admittedly, so do most nonunion members.
The irony in all of this is that the majority of buyers in the Valley shop at businesses where the bulk of the products are made in China or elsewhere outside the United States. So, there you are, we doth protest too much.
Is there a short-term solution to this dilemma? No. Well then, what can we do? Simply put, we must educate our buyers. Frankly, I am sick and tired of seeing "made in China" on almost everything. If we do not begin now to say "enough is enough," the situation will never change.
We Americans are great at complaining, picketing, and marching. Why don't we start with one day a month of refusing to buy anything not made in America? Or, if we don't want to do this, at least say to the seller, let me see your American-made products.
To me, this is really a matter of perseverance. As C.F. Kettering said: "You'll never cross the ocean if you get off the ship when it storms." In my opinion, too many of us are off the ship.

Boles needs to apologize forcomments about Dem chief
EDITOR:
Recently Clarence Boles, Youngstown councilman elect, alleged that Democratic Party chair Lisa Antonini exhibited racial basis by not appointing an interim 6th Ward council person before the official term commences in January.
We take great exception to this defamation of Antonini's character. We have worked closely with Lisa on a number of political and community endeavors, and Boles' characterization of her is false and misleading. On the contrary, Lisa has always shown keen sensitivity to the challenges faced by people of color, and has worked hard to improve the political landscape for blacks.
Boles certainly has every right to disagree with the party on specific political issues, but he has no right to classify her as a racist. That is unfair and untrue, and Boles owes her an apology.

A motorist in need thanksthe one who didn't pass by
EDITOR:
In a time of thanksgiving, please allow me to thank the kind gentleman who gave me assistance when I really needed it.
My car being disabled on a major traffic road, he helped me push my car to a side road. Then he let me use his cell phone to call for help. When other people were blowing their horns and others just watching me struggle, he stopped and helped me. My many thanks to this kind and caring gentleman.

Kindness of people of Youngstown makes a believer out of a Canadian
EDITOR:
Your beautiful city left me with fond memories of my visit to my daughter Janet Morley of Boardman. My bank by mistake, had given me American Express T.C. in Canadian funds, cashed some with no notice of this pertinent fact (until later) was then running in circles trying to pay back the difference owing, was overwhelmed by the kindness of your city folks.
One lady, seeing my predicament, was even ready to pay for items that I relinquished. On my next visit to Youngstown, I will make sure my traveler's checks are in U.S. funds. So much good is spread by kindness, amazing, is it not?
