NILES -- Our Lady of Mount Carmel students recently exhibited their artwork for the first time in the Nissen Arts and Medicine Gallery at Forum Health in Trumbull Memorial Hospital. More than 100 pieces of artwork and two quilts were displayed. Throughout the school year, Mt. Carmel offers an after-school art program that just completed a six-week workshop focused on artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, M.C. Escher, Rembrandt and George Seurat. A January workshop will involve working with clay.

Internet grants received
COLUMBUS -- St. Matthias in Youngstown is among the 13 Ohio state-chartered, nonpublic schools that have been awarded a total of $102,420 in Ohio SchoolNet Telecommunity Internet Grant money, the Ohio SchoolNet Commission announced. St. Matthias received $8,000.
The Internet grants can be used for software, hardware, professional and content development, and other resources that teach pupils various concepts using the Internet.

YSU to get grades online
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University students will receive their grades in the mail for the final time this month as YSU begins the transition to a system in which grades will be distributed online.
Grades for the fall semester were mailed this month and tare also available online through the university's Student Information Display system. Students must enter their patron identification and personal identification numbers to access their grade reports.
In May, grades will no longer be delivered via mail. Students will be able to access their grades online and print their grade reports. Certified paper copies of grades will be available in the registrar's office.
The new system will save about $2,700 per semester in postage.
Autism center donations
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rich Center for the Study and Treatment of Autism is looking for donations to help the families it serves. The center, on the Youngstown State University campus, provides a resource library and a research center to train professionals working in the field of autism and supports children with the disorder and their families.

Teacher-prep programs
WEXFORD, Pa. -- An agreement between the presidents of four area colleges means that community college students can now transition into teacher-preparation programs at Slippery Rock University. The presidents of SRU, the Community College of Allegheny County, the Community College of Beaver County and the Butler County Community College recently met at Slippery Rock University's North Hills Center to approve the alliance.
Malone College program

PSU master plan study
BUTLER, Pa. -- Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann Associates has been selected by Penn State University, Shenango, to prepare a master plan study for the renovation of the 80,000-square-foot connected Lecture and Sharon Halls. The $5 million project will bridge the design and build processes for the completion.
Burt Hill employs approximately 350 people in Pittsburgh; Butler, Pa.; Philadelphia; Boston; Washington, D.C.; and Cleveland.
Evening block courses
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Accelerated Lifelong Learning courses in finance and oral interpretation, inquiry, advanced topics in economics, and elementary Spanish II begin Jan. 5 at Westminster College. The evening block courses allow non-traditional students to finish two courses per semester by attending class one night per week.
Courses in management information systems, basic studio art, managerial accounting, intermediate Spanish I, and public and personal persuasion begin March 8. AAA travel challenge
AAA Travel and the Hogan Family Foundation are offering scholarships totaling $156,000 through the second annual AAA Travel High School Challenge, a national contest designed to heighten travel and geographic literacy and to create awareness of job opportunities in the travel and tourism industries.
Students in grades nine to 12 can enroll for the first-round preliminary 40-question contest through Jan. 21. Those who register prior to Wednesday and complete the contest will be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond. Visit www.aaa.com/TravelChallenge.
