AREA COLLEGES Hiram balances its attack in victory



Newton Falls graduate Desiree Sterling scored a career-high for Westminster.
HIRAM -- Carlton Dean and A.J. White both posted double-doubles and all five starters scored in double figures, as the Hiram College men's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak Thursday with an 84-78 non-conference win over Carnegie Mellon.
Dean scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while White added 13 points and had 10 assists. Phil Goll chipped in with 13 points for Hiram (2-7), while DaJuan Whiteside had 11 and Brandon Pool 10.
Michael Divins led Carnegie Mellon (4-3) with 22 points. Jason Walters added 20.
Slippery Rock 78,East Stroudsburg 70
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Bill Johnson shot 9-for-14 for 26 points and Shaun Grill had 16 points and Jason Taylor added 10 more for the Rockets (3-6).
Rich Baker led four double-figure scorers with 22 points for East Stroudsburg (6-3).
Women
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman guard Desiree Sterling, a graduate of Newton Falls High, scored a career-high 17 points to help Westminster defeat Wooster 73-62.
Erica Tallo added 11 points and 14 rebounds -- her fourth double-double of the year -- for the Titans (4-4).
Jen Flavin scored 18 points for Wooster (4-5).
Slippery Rock 62,East Stroudsburg 47
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Erin Frankovich scored 23 points and added 13 rebounds, while Kristen Bonner added 14 points for the Rock.
Niki Cox scored 17 points in a losing effort.
Seton Hill 79, Thiel 57
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Despite having three players finish in double figures, Thiel could not overcome a late first-half rally by Seton Hill.
The Lady Griffins used a 36-15 run in the first half to take a 43-26 halftime lead.
Freshman forward Fontella Jones, a Farrell High graduate, had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Thiel.
