GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP Canfield upends Howland, 53-31
Poland and Salem also won Metro Athletic Conference openers.
CANFIELD -- Senior guard Emily Wollet scored a career-high 21 points as the Canfield High girls basketball team defeated Howland 53-31 in the Metro Athletic Conference opener Wednesday.
In the first half Howland (2-3, 0-1 MAC) was forced into 16 turnovers and shot just 1-for-19 as the Cardinals (4-1, 1-0) led 26-4.
Wollet scored eight points in the third quarter as Canfield took a 42-14 lead.
Corey Hoffman added six points and 10 rebounds, while Stephanie Zunic had four points and six assists.
Sara Krezeczowski scored 10 points for the Tigers, who defeated Canfield twice last season.
Poland 59, Struthers 30
POLAND -- Jessica Toth scored 18 points as the Bulldogs (3-1, 1-0 MAC) pulled away from a one-point halftime lead.
Poland led 22-21 at the break, then out-scored the Wildcats (1-4, 0-1) 19-0 in the third quarter.
Erin Hawkins added 13 points for Poland.
Amanda Ardale and Holly Hickenbottom scored seven points each for Struthers.
Salem 72, Alliance 37
SALEM -- Lauren Teal collected 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Renee Farina added 12 points for the Quakers (5-1, 1-0 MAC).
The Quakers shot out to a 24-4 lead after eight minutes.
Lizzie Jesko scored 10 points and Alyson Cotter added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
For the Aviators (2-2, 0-1), Jan Kehres scored 11 points and had five rebounds.
Fitch 66, Wilson 33
YOUNGSTOWN -- Courtney Williams tossed in 16 points and led Fitch to its second win of the season.
Krista Mays added 12 points and Danielle Storey had 11 for the Falcons (2-4).
Wilson (1-5) was led by Leslie Norwood with 12 points, while Rhonnesa Griffin added 11, including three 3-point goals.
