MAC/TAC Shurilla leads Poland past 'Cats



He missed only one field goal and scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half.
POLAND -- Jim Shurilla made 9-for-10 from the field and finished with 22 points, to lead the Poland High boys basketball team to a 74-53 win over Struthers in a Metro Athletic Conference game Tuesday.
After the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0) took a 34-15 lead at the break, Shurilla scored 20 of his points in the second half.
Chad Fender had 12 points and five assists and Nick Henry added seven rebounds for Poland.
Dave Mathews scored 18 points and Mike Duponty scored 15 for the Wildcats (1-3, 0-1).
Canfield 71, Howland 41
CANFIELD -- Frank Turocy scored 17 of his 19 points before halftime as the Cardinals (3-1, 1-0) won their first MAC game.
Turocy scored nine points in a 24-point second quarter for Canfield, which led 36-14 at the break.
Andrew Havas and Kyle Melewski each scored 10 points for the Cardinals, who have won three straight.
Justin Byler scored nine points for the Tigers (3-1, 0-1).
Salem 49, Alliance 47
ALLIANCE -- Salem used a 16-9 fourth-quarter advantage to pull past Alliance in a MAC game.
Alliance had a chance to tie the score with 10 seconds left, but turned the ball over on the in-bounds pass.
Joe Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Salem (2-1, 1-0), while Landon Heath added 13 points.
Austin Banks and Chris Banks each scored 10 for Alliance (1-1, 0-1).
Niles 62, Hubbard 42
NILES -- Dan Jones led the way with 21 points, while Kevin Robertson added 16 points and four 3-point goals.
Bill Frech supported the Niles (1-3) attack with 11 points.
For the Eagles, Russell Hawkins scored 14 points and Jacoby Morris was in with 10 points.
Liberty 78, Badger 44
LIBERTY -- Liberty forced 13 first-quarter turnovers to take a 29-1 lead after the first eight minutes.
Bradley Fletcher led the Leopards (4-0) with 26 points and Marcellus Bowman added eight points and 10 rebounds. Chad Huston had 16 points, Shawn Mealy had five points and five assists and Joe Lopez had five points and seven assists.
Tyler Romine scored 12 points to lead Badger (0-4).
Jefferson 79, Champion 69
JEFFERSON -- Nick Wildman scored 27 points to lead Champion, which cut its fourth-quarter deficit to four points with a minute left, but could get no closer.
Mark Jackson scored 13 and Adam Lantz added 12 points for Champion (0-4).
Zack Dennis scored 21 points to lead Jefferson (2-1).
