YOUNGSTOWN -- An overloaded tractor-trailer broke down on Interstate 680, causing a portion of the road to be shut down for more than six hours. Police said the tractor-trailer was northbound at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday when the weight of its load -- a large metal gear -- caused the trailer to snap. The truck was driven by Charles A. Collins, no age or address given by police, and owned by Niles Iron and Metal. I-680 was shut down between the Market Street and Glenwood Avenue exits until about 10:45 p.m., while the load was transferred to another vehicle, police said. Collins' truck was towed. The tractor-trailer, with the load, weighed 122,754 pounds, which is an overload of 42,754 pounds, police said. Collins was ticketed for having an unsafe vehicle and having an overload.
Drive-by shooting
BOARDMAN -- Township police are investigating a drive-by shooting Tuesday evening. According to reports, a 44-year-old South Avenue man called police after hearing a series of gunshots hit his residence. Police said eight to 10 shots were fired from a car, which was seen leaving the South Avenue area at about 8 p.m. Officers recovered cartridge casings outside the mobile home and found several bullet holes in its walls.
Falsification charge filedagainst Youngstown teen
BOARDMAN -- A 17-year-old Youngstown boy has been charged with falsification in connection with a township police report filed Nov. 30. The boy told police in November that he had been robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot of Wal-Mart on Doral Drive. Police said the Woodrow Wilson High School student later confessed he made up the report because he needed a ride home and figured officers would drive him there after taking a report.
Case treated as a hazing
BOARDMAN -- A Meadow Lane man told police his son was the victim of gross sexual imposition at Boardman High School. Police are treating it as a hazing. According to police, the 15-year-old victim was held down by a group of other boys while one boy dropped his pants and sat on the victim's face. Police said it happened near the locker room. The alleged hazing was reported Tuesday, though the father said it happened Dec. 12. Police said they will present information about the case to Mahoning County juvenile prosecutors.
Firearms violation
YOUNGSTOWN -- A federal grand jury indicted Mark Andrews Jr., 24, of Hayman Street on Tuesday on charges of violating federal firearms laws. The indictment alleges that Andrews possessed a firearm and ammunition after being convicted of a felony. The case is being prosecuted as part of a special program that targets armed felons for federal prosecution.
Truck rolls on Route 165
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- State Route 165, just south of Beard Road in Springfield Township, was closed for several hours this morning after a truck carrying fuel rolled over, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. The truck didn't spill its load, the patrol said. The driver, whose name wasn't released this morning, suffered minor injuries during the accident, which occurred about 3:20 a.m. today. The accident is under investigation. No other details were released.
Probing pupil's report
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that an 11-year-old Austintown Middle School pupil bruised his arm when a bus driver pulled him onto the bus Tuesday afternoon. The boy's mother told police that the driver pulled the boy over the last step and into the aisle, where he fell.
Council OKs budget
SALEM -- City council approved a temporary $1.65 million general fund budget. The spending plan, adopted Tuesday by council, is aimed at getting the city through the first three months of 2004 until a yearlong budget can be authorized in the spring. City officials and council members are asking residents to ensure they keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice, especially in the downtown business district.
