LISBON -- The Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol was at the scene of a head-on crash on state Route 45 near Kent State University Salem Campus. The patrol said at least one person was taken to Salem Community Hospital after the crash about 7 a.m. Details were not available this morning.
Woman reports robbery
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said a 77-year-old woman was robbed of her purse as she was taking groceries into her apartment building at 99 Todd Ave. The victim had just returned from the market around 10:25 p.m. Tuesday and was carrying groceries up the stairs in her building when she was grabbed from behind by a man who knocked her down and took her purse containing a small amount of cash and various identification and other cards. Police said the victim suffered minor injuries and could only describe her assailant as a white man wearing a dark coat.
Preventing thefts
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An increase in the number of thefts from unattended vehicles has Pennsylvania State Police warning motorists to take the following precautions:
* Park in well-lighted areas.
* Avoid parking in isolated areas.
* Always lock your vehicle, even in your driveway.
* Remove all small items of value from the vehicle. Lock them in the trunk or place them out of sight.
* Consider installing a vehicle alarm system.
* When you park, look around to see who might be loitering nearby.
* If possible, check on your vehicle occasionally.

LISBON -- Anyone wishing to attend Columbiana County 4-H camps or apply for scholarships must submit 4-H achievement records to the extension office by Jan. 4.
4-H Camp at Camp Whitewood will be July 5-8. The Columbiana County Fair will be Aug. 2-8. Less emergency money
FARRELL, Pa. -- Mercer County will be getting less in federal Emergency Food and Shelter grants this year. The county received $61,859 last year from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and it was divided up between the Prince of Peace Center and the Shenango Valley Urban League to provide help to low-income county residents needing food and shelter.
U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd, said the county will receive $55,642 this year. The distribution of that money will be determined by the local Emergency Food and Shelter Board.
Hunting-accident charge
BEAVER, Pa. (AP) -- A California teenager has been charged by the state Game Commission in a hunting accident that seriously injured a 70-year-old man.
The 16-year-old boy was taking a rifle off his shoulder in Hanover Township, Beaver County, on Dec. 9 when the gun went off, according to the game commission.
A bullet from the rifle struck William Vujasin, who was standing about 10 feet away, and passed through his body, game officials said. He was in serious condition at Allegheny General Hospital on Tuesday, hospital officials said.
The boy, who was not identified, was charged with injuring another person while hunting and also hunting without a nonresident license.
The charges, both misdemeanors, were filed through the Beaver County juvenile division.
Council OKs budget
SALEM -- City council approved a temporary $1.65 million general fund budget.
The spending plan, adopted Tuesday by council, is aimed at getting the city through the first three months of 2004 until a yearlong budget can be authorized in the spring.
City officials and council members are asking residents to ensure they keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice, especially in the downtown business district.
