Caretaker convicted of killing elderly man

CLEVELAND (AP) -- A caregiver was convicted of killing a 75-year-old man who was found dead with 12 ounces of antifreeze in his system.
Daniela Mays, 36, faces 25 years to life in prison for murder when she is sentenced Jan. 20.
Mays took care of John McEwen of Parma and largely lived off his money, Cuyahoga County prosecutors said.
They presented a case built on circumstantial evidence that contained references to ghosts, wands and potions. Prosecutors sought to tie the poisoning to Mays' belief in Wicca, a religion that reveres nature and embraces witchcraft. Mays said she was a witch in a former life and owned a wand and spellbook.
McEwen went to the hospital on the morning of Nov. 13, 2002 -- hours after a violent fight with Mays -- and died the following day.
Mays denied killing McEwen, and said he was like a father. She said McEwen became strange and violent on the night of Nov. 12, attacking her before leaving her house.
Mays' attorneys suggested McEwen may have killed himself.
