MEN'S BASKETBALL Zips hang tough with No. 7 UNC
The Tar Heels remained unbeaten with a 64-53 win over visiting Akron.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Rashad McCants had 14 points and Sean May had a Smith Center-record 21 rebounds Sunday to lift No. 7 North Carolina to a 64-53 victory over Akron.
Jawad Williams scored 13 points and Raymond Felton added 12 for the Tar Heels (6-0), who are off to their best start since winning their first eight games in 1998-99. May finished with 10 points on 3-for-18 shooting.
Romeo Travis scored 13 points to lead Akron (3-2). Derrick Tarver, who came into the game averaging 24.8 points, had seven on 3-for-16 shooting.
No. 4 Duke 84, Portland 43
DURHAM, N.C. -- Reserve Luol Deng scored 15 points and Duke held Portland to three first-half baskets.
Deng scored 11 of his points as the Blue Devils built a 28-point halftime edge.
Duke (6-1) didn't have much trouble with its overall game after an eight-day layoff for exams, extending the nation's longest home winning streak to 31.
Eugene Jeter led the Pilots (5-2) with 10 points, but was 3-for-15 from the field.
No. 6 Texas 89, New Orleans 55
AUSTIN, Texas -- Brian Boddicker had 16 points and 12 rebounds as Texas extended its home winning streak to 20 games. P.J. Tucker had 17 points and Brandon Mouton scored 15 for Texas (5-1). Bo McCalebb led New Orleans (3-1) with 15 points.
No. 12 Saint Joseph's 92, Drexel 70
PHILADELPHIA -- Jameer Nelson scored 24 points, Delonte West added 20 and Chet Stachitas had a career-high 14, all but two on 3-pointers, for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's (7-0) had a season-high 13 3-pointers and finished with a season-high point total.
Sean Brooks scored 22 points and Tim Whitworth had 14 for Drexel (2-4), which shot 53 percent while losing to the Hawks for the 14th straight time.
Rhode Island 60, Kent St. 49
KENT -- Dustin Hellenga scored 15 points and Brian Woodward added 12 to lead Rhode Island.
The Rams (6-2) never trailed and responded each time the Golden Flashes (4-1) got close in the second half.
John Edwards led Kent State with 18 points.
Wooster 80, Westminster 61
WOOSTER -- Westminster lost its fifth straight game, as Wooster's Matt Schlingman had team-high totals of 16 points and nine rebounds.
Wooster improved to 6-1.
Sophomore Mark DeMonaco (New Castle) led Westminster (1-5) with 21 points, six rebounds and five steals. Ed Pagley (New Castle) added 12 points and Chris Hatch (South Range) scored 10.
