MEN'S BASKETBALL Penguins tip off Horizon schedule
YSU plays host to Wright State tonight at 7.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team begins its third season in the Horizon League tonight, when the Penguins play host to Wright State at Beeghly Center at 7.
Youngstown State (2-5) begins a key stretch, with three home games in the next five days.
The Penguins play host to Oakland (Mich.) Saturday and UMKC on Monday.
Youngstown State's two wins, against St. Francis (Pa.) and Slippery Rock, have come at Beeghly Center. In their last outing, the Penguins lost 57-42 at then-No. 20 Pittsburgh. Senior center Adam Baumann had 16 points and eight rebounds for YSU.
Wright State (1-5) is coming off a 79-73 loss to Southern Illinois. Under first-year coach Paul Biancardi, the Raiders defeated Ball State while also losing to Cedarville, South Florida, Morehead State and Miami (Ohio).
Since joining the Horizon League, YSU has won six conference games at home, including two over the Raiders. Last year at Beeghly Center, the Penguins won 66-60. Wright State defeated YSU 80-68 on its home floor.
The Penguins have won their last three home games against Wright State.
Scouting Wright State
The Raiders are off to a 1-5 start for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign and are 0-3 on the road.
Senior Seth Doliboa leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.3 points per game. Against Southern Illinois, Doliboa had 22 points despite sitting out the final 11 minutes of the first half in foul trouble.
Vernard Hollins is averaging 17 points per game.
Wright State leads the all-time series 20-6, but the Penguins have won three of the last five meetings.
The YSU-Oakland game is scheduled to begin Saturday at 2 p.m., while the UMKC contest on Monday is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
