GREENFORD South Range to put emergency levy on ballot
GREENFORD -- South Range Board of Education agreed Monday to seek voter approval for a 6.9-mill emergency property tax levy on the March primary ballot.
The school district was notified by the Mahoning County auditor that 6.9 mills will raise an extra $921,425 each year for the next five years to keep the district operating.
Superintendent Jim Hall said it has been eight years since the school district asked for additional or new money from district residents.
Meanwhile, the board also adopted a five-year financial forecast reflecting funds raised through the proposed levy.
Last month, school officials had several informational meetings to raise public awareness of the district's financial situation.
Hall said attendance at those meetings was disappointingly low. He said the school district's forecast, like others in the area, has been affected by a decrease in the amount of money received from the state.
& quot;If we can't raise the money, we will be in trouble, & quot; Hall said. & quot;That's all there is to it. & quot;
