NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Union Township residents can buy burning permits for $5 beginning Jan. 12, township supervisors announced.
The permits are good for one year and, unlike previous permits, will be dated from the date purchased, not by the calendar year. They are available at the municipal building, 1910 Wilson Drive.
Also, the township's reorganization meeting has been set for 3 p.m. Jan. 5 at the municipal building.
Home burglarized
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said someone stole a loaded .38-caliber Smith & amp; Wesson revolver, an undisclosed amount of cash and early 20th-century coins from a home in the 800 block of Wengler Avenue.
The home's resident told police the items were taken late Tuesday or early Wednesday. There was no sign of forced entry.
Police are also investigating the burglary of a garage in the 100 block of South Myers Avenue Tuesday night. Entry was gained through an unlocked door, and a snow blower, weed trimmer, a mountain bicycle and two sets of golf clubs were taken.
Wreck injures man
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Thomas Gongloff, 33, of Yankee Ridge Road, Mercer, was in satisfactory condition today in Sharon Regional Health System with injuries suffered when his pickup truck ran under the trailer being pulled by a semi at Pa. Route 18 and East State Street.
Police said Gongloff was westbound on State Street and collided with the northbound tractor-trailer in the intersection around 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The driver of the rig, Robert Dota, 55, of Trippwood Court, Youngstown, wasn't injured.
Police said the tractor-trailer dragged the pickup 220 feet before it broke loose. Investigators haven't determined who had the green light at the intersection.
Man dies in Arizona fire
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- An 82-year-old Youngstown-area man died early Wednesday in a house fire when he tried to rescue two dogs, officials said.
Bob Cassidy got out of the hillside home where his daughter lives but decided to return in search of the dogs, firefighters said. He was found dead on the kitchen floor. His exact address was unavailable.
The fire was caused by a malfunctioning television, fire authorities told The Arizona Republic newspaper.
Cassidy was pronounced dead shortly after the 2:50 a.m. fire, which caused $150,000 damage to the house, the newspaper reported.
Cassidy's daughter, Barbara Cassidy, was treated for smoke inhalation.
Holiday Blood Drive
YOUNGSTOWN -- The eighth annual Holiday Blood Drive, sponsored by the American Red Cross and News Channel 33, will be Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Byzantine Center at the Grove, 3801 Shady Run Road.
Everyone who donates will receive a poinsettia, courtesy of Inglis Greenhouse, and food donated by area vendors.
ARC blood donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.
Donors may give blood every 56 days. Also, donors are asked to bring some form of photo identification and a list of all current medications.

Stable after shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 26-year-old Youngstown man was in stable condition this morning in St. Elizabeth Health Center with two gunshot wounds to his left thigh.
Police said Ramon Kimbrough of Bennington Avenue was walking to his car in the driveway of a home in the 200 block of East LaClede Avenue with a 19-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday when he was shot.
Kimbrough told police that a man dressed in black and wearing a ski mask opened fire after saying, "You know what this is about."
The shooter fled on foot through rear yards.
Food bank donation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dominion East Ohio has awarded $5,000 to Second Harvest Foodbank for the purchase and installation of new cold storage doors for the freezer and cooler at the food bank's new facility at 2805 Salt Springs Road.
Second Harvest, currently at 1122 E. Midlothian Blvd., takes occupancy of the new facility in January, donated by Dr. Jacques Politi and his family.
Second Harvest provides food to 200 hunger relief organizations in Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
