ICL/TCL Springfield stages a second-half rally
Marc Russell and Tobey Culler paced the Tigers' 53-38 win over Mineral Ridge.
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Springfield High boys basketball team rallied in the second half to post a 53-38 victory over Mineral Ridge, in an Inter-County League opener Tuesday.
The Rams (1-2, 0-1) led 24-22 at the break, but the Tigers (2-0, 1-0) pulled away in the third period with a 17-6 surge.
Marc Russell sparked Springfield with 17 points and Tobey Culler finished with 14.
Jason Garland led the Rams with 19 points and six rebounds. Micah Hall had three assists.
Mathews 53, Lowellville 46
VIENNA -- The Mustangs used a good free throw shooting effort in the final minutes to put the game away in an ICL game.
Mathews (2-1, 1-0) led 26-15 at the half, but the Rockets (0-3, 0-1) tied the game at 42 with about five minutes to play.
Matt Weymer, who had 11 points, made a 3-pointer for a 45-42 Mathews lead and the Mustangs hit on 11-of-16 free throws the rest of the way.
Ian Paddock had 15 points and Chris Vesey rebounded 14 times for Mathews.
Vince Broll scored 14 points for Lowellville.
Jackson-Milton 66, McDonald 63
NORTH JACKSON -- Tim Shaw scored eight of his 19 points in the deciding fourth quarter for the Bluejays (2-1, 1-0) in an ICL game.
McDonald (1-2, 0-1) used a 24-point second quarter to stake a 38-27 lead at the break and was still in front, 50-41, entering the final eight minutes.
Mark Balent added 16 points and Zack Nicholas had 15 points and six rebounds for Jackson-Milton.
James Beedle, Ken McKay, Nick Testa and Mark Macali scored 17, 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bluejays.
South Range-Western Reserve
BERLIN CENTER -- This ICL game was postponed until Jan. 20 due to an outbreak of the flu at South Range.
Sebring 53, Southern 48
SALINEVILLE -- David Scarpitti scored 19 points and Joe Amaboli added 10 for Sebring in a Tri-County League game.
The Trojans (2-0, 1-0) led 42-34 heading into the fourth quarter and held off the Indians' (2-1, 0-1) last rally. Josh Diaz took scoring honors for Southern with 18 points.
