COLUMBIANA Counselors available after fatal shooting
COLUMBIANA -- Crestview High School officials had counselors available for students this morning after the shooting death of Brenton G. McCurdy, 18, of Adams Road, Unity Township.
Superintendent John Dilling said McCurdy, a senior, was well-known in the district, where there are about 400 students in the ninth through 12th grades.
McCurdy was shot Friday evening inside a Clark Street home in East Palestine.
Police continue to investigate, but Chief Clyde Hoffmeister said he considers the shooting to be an accident.
Hoffmeister did not want to release any details of the shooting. He said police will conduct further interviews today with witnesses and others.
Police and fire department paramedics were called to the home at about 7:45 p.m. Police said McCurdy did not respond to emergency treatment by police or paramedics.
Hoffmeister said a 12-gauge shotgun was removed from the home.
Columbiana County prosecutor's investigators and the Cuyahoga County coroner's offices are assisting in the investigation.
