Walk-a-thon falls short
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College's first attempt at running a walk-a-thon to benefit Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh didn't quite make its goal.
The plan was to raise $50,000 in the two-day, 100-mile trek from the campus to the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, where the hospital is located.
The walkers netted $27,228 in the drive, including collections that started in September, said Steph Erdice, student service specialist with the college's student services department.
About 70 people participated in the walk Friday and Saturday.
The annual walk had been sponsored by Phi Theta Phi fraternity at Thiel College for 35 years and raised more than $1 million during that time period.
The fraternity was disbanded a year ago for violation of various college regulations, and the college took on the walk-a-thon effort.
