BASKETBALL Hot 3rd quarter guides Mooney



YOUNGSTOWN -- Cardinal Mooney broke open a close game in the third quarter, then pulled away from Struthers to post its third straight victory, 56-42, Friday night.
Leading 26-21 at halftime, the Cardinals (3-0) outscored the Wildcats 15-4 in the third period to take control.
Mooney was led by Dave Zidian with 17 points, while Ron Stoops added 16 and Jeff Hehr chipped in with 14.
Struthers (1-2) was led by sophomore Mike DuPonty with 13 points and Dave Mathews with 12.
Howland 76, Lakeview 71
CORTLAND -- In a close game, Howland took the upper hand in the fourth quarter to prevail.
Cody Chappell poured in a game-high 23 points for the winner, which had 30 rebounds, while Chuck Williams, a senior post player, paced Lakeview with 16 points and 12 of his team's 36 rebounds.
Also for the Tigers, Justin Byler tacked on 17 points and Jeff Proctor 15.
Matt Nero added 13 for the Bulldogs and Joey O'Palka-Brown had 10.
