Birth defects council
The Ohio Birth Defects Advisory Council recently had its first meeting. Its goal is to establish a statewide information system that will identify how big of a birth-defect problem Ohio has, where clusters exist, and where the health-care focus needs to be.
One of nine states without a birth defects information system, Ohio received a five-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to start the program, and will receive $140,000 the first year. Ohio also received a $25,000 grant from the March of Dimes Ohio Chapter for 2004.
Beginning yoga class
WARREN -- St. Joseph Health Center offers a seven-session beginning yoga class for adults from Jan. 12 through Feb. 23 on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. or 7 to 8:15 p.m. The cost is $57. For registration information, call (877) 700-4647.

Grant for patient records
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Foundation approved a $3,500 grant for the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Youngstown to be used for securing patient records on-site.
Immunization clinic
GIRARD -- A free well-child immunization clinic is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Girard Health Department, 100 W. Main St. The shots are free to Girard city children. Parents must bring their child's shot record, and a parent or guardian must accompany children under the age of 18. Preregistration is required. Call (330) 545-6048.
Hair show and career fair
AUSTINTOWN -- The graduating seniors from the Hair Academy will hold a public hair show and career fair at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the academy, 6000 Mahoning Ave. Hair styling and makeup will be demonstrated and modeled.
Afterward, representatives from several salons will participate in a discussion of career opportunities.
