ROUNDUP Maplewood defeats Pymatuning Valley in conference opener
Brittany McElroy scored 37 points for Southern, in a victory over Wilson.
ANDOVER -- Despite shooting 7-of-22 at the free throw line, the Maplewood High girls basketball team remained unbeaten by defeating Pymatuning Valley 41-38 in their Northeastern Athletic Conference opener Thursday.
Stephanie Schwartz paced the Rockets (5-0), who led 15-6 after the first quarter, with 12 points.
Pymatuning Valley (1-4) was led by Shannon Rowe's 11 points and Michelle Lantanen's 10.
Badger 50, Bloomfield 34
NORTH BLOOMFIELD -- Christine Miller scored all 18 of her points in the middle quarters to lead Badger to victory, its first in the NAC after moving from the Trumbull Athletic Conference.
Bloomfield led 14-9 after the first quarter, but Badger (2-4) went to a press and outscored the Cardinals 36-14 in the second and third quarters. Miller added seven steals.
Shannon Sudon and Becca McMenamin each grabbed five of Badger's 29 rebounds, and Sudon added five assists.
Kristine Troyer scored 15 points to pace Bloomfield.
Crestview 54, Lowellville 49
LOWELLVILLE -- The Rebels (3-1) were ahead 44-30 by the end of the third quarter, then held off a late rally by the Rockets (1-2).
Katie Kibby sparked the Rebels with 16 points, 19 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Elyse Mongillo chipped in with 10 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Amanda Nero took scoring honors for Lowellville with 22 points. She was 6-for-8 at the foul line. Dana Donatelli added 11 points.
Jackson-Milton 70, McDonald 49
NORTH JACKSON -- The Bluejays (2-2, 1-0) held a 44-37 lead after three quarters, then broke open the Inter-County League opener with a 26-12 surge in the final period.
Sarah Johnson took scoring honors for the Bluejays with 27 points. Shannon McGee chipped in with 11 and Joanna Woloschak grabbed 12 rebounds.
Ashleigh Tondo led the Blue Devils (2-2, 0-1) with 21 points, while AshshenaStephens added 11.
Southern 66, Wilson 35
YOUNGSTOWN -- Brittany McElroy poured in 37 points and Southern (2-1) held Wilson scoreless in the third quarter for the victory. McElroy's made seven 3-pointers.
Wilson (1-4) was led by Leslie Norwood's 14 points.
Brookfield 37, Sharpsville 25
BROOKFIELD -- The Warriors (2-1) took command with a 14-2 edge in the first quarter.
Kaitlyn Nasci led Brookfield's attack with 12 points.
Boardman 96, Fitch 14
BOARDMAN -- Amber Bland led the Spartans (2-0) with 29 points. Diane Snyder, Brittany Sirak and Brittany Durkin contributed 16, 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Spartans.
