THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Davis Love III gets to hang around with Fred Couples, Darren Clarke and a lot of his best buddies this week. The purse is $5 million at the Target World Challenge. The money is guaranteed.
This is a fun week.
It just didn't feel like that Thursday.
Cold, blustery conditions left Love, tournament host Tiger Woods and everyone else scrambling to save par or worse. By the end of the round, Love found himself the top survivor at 2-under 70 for a one-stroke lead.
"Like most of the guys, I was a little rusty, and those aren't the conditions you want to see when it's the first round in a couple of weeks," Love said. "I hung in there real good."
Woods played the three par 5s on the back nine at Sherwood Country Club in 4-under, and he made two eagles in the opening round.
Bad shots
But there was that bogey on the par-5 second hole with a 7-iron for his second shot; a three-putt bogey; a chunked chip for another bogey; and back-to-back bogeys to end his round.
That left him at 71, along with Kenny Perry and Justin Leonard.
"I turned a nice little 67 into a 71 today," he said. "I hit it so well. I just made too many mistakes."
He wasn't alone.
Only four players managed to break par on a Sherwood course that played extremely difficult in the stiff, swirling winds and greens that break sharply around the hole.
"If you shot even par, you won the battle," Perry said.
So where does that leave Darren Clarke?
The trimmed-down Irishman had a triple bogey and two double bogeys on his way to an 81.
Vijay Singh was 2-under through 14 holes when he, too, went into a swoon. He made triple bogey on the par-3 15th and for good measure bogeyed the last two holes for a 74.
Defending champion Padraig Harrington also had a 74.
Australian PGA
COOLUM, Australia -- Peter Senior shot a 7-under 65 today to take a five-shot lead after two rounds of the Australian PGA.
Senior, an Australian who was tied with fellow countryman Steve Collins after the first round, had eight birdies and one bogey on the 6,852-yard, par-72 Hyatt Regency resort course. He is 15-under 129 overall.
Rod Pampling is second at 134 after a 69 on Friday. Peter O'Malley, Nick O'Hern and Craig Parry are tied for third at 135 -- six strokes back of Senior. Collins had a 73 to drop into a tie for seventh with Adam Scott (69) and Stephen Allan (67).
Jean Van de Velde, trying to come back from a serious knee injury, had his second straight 69 that left him nine strokes back of Senior and tied for 10th. Americans Ryan Palmer and Stewart Cink were in a group of seven with Van de Velde, Cink with a 67 and Palmer with a 69.
Greg Norman, using tennis player Lleyton Hewitt as his caddie, had an inconsistent day with two double-bogeys, two bogeys and four birdies for a 2-over 74. He's tied for 31st and 12 shots back of Senior.
