Drug-death trial delayed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The trial of 17-year-old Walter R. Phibbs III of Oregon Trail, Boardman, was postponed Friday in Mahoning County Juvenile Court. He faces charges including involuntary manslaughter in the Feb. 5 death of Paul Graham II, 17, of Glenwood Avenue, who was found dead in his home. Phibbs also is charged with drug trafficking, corrupting another with drugs and theft.
In early April, the Mahoning County coroner ruled that the death was caused by drug toxicity. Police said they later determined that Phibbs had given Graham morphine pills he had stolen from his mother. Prosecutors had asked that Phibbs be bound over to common pleas court for trial as an adult, but Judge Theresa Dellick of juvenile court ruled last week that he be tried as a juvenile.
6th Ward replacement
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 6th Ward Democratic precinct committee will meet at 12:30 today at 2901 Market St. to discuss and select a replacement through year's end for the ward's vacant city council seat.
The issue has been controversial. Clarence Boles, the Democratic 6th Ward councilman-elect, wants to be appointed to the seat, citing a lack of representation for the ward this month. The Mahoning Democratic Party chairwoman, Lisa Antonini, has declined to call the meeting and fill the seat. She cited a seniority advantage Boles would have on council over two other newly elected Democratic council members who take office in January.
Five of eight precinct committee members were polled and want the meeting, said Andrew Douglas, the ward leader.
