ADVANCED TRAINING
Graduated course
Army 2nd Lt. Andrew G. Hogue graduated from the four-month infantry officer basic course at Fort Benning, Ga. Hogue is a son of Glenn E. and Jo Ann Hogue of Mercer, Pa. He graduated in 1999 from Mercer High School, and this year received a bachelor's degree from the Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
PROMOTIONS
Navy captain
Navy Capt. Thomas C. Nicholas, son of Marie N. Peterson of New Wilmington, Pa., was promoted to his current rank
while serving at Naval Support Activity, Naples, Italy. Nicholas joined the Navy in July 1979.
Lt. Col. in Air Force
Air Force Lt. Col. Scott D. Weber was promoted to his current rank while assigned as assistant deputy operations group commander with the 436th Operations Group at Dover Air Force Base, Del.
Weber, son of Dennis P. and Ruthann M. Weber of Grove City, Pa., graduated in 1983 from Seneca Valley High School, Harmony, Pa., and received a bachelor's degree in 1987 from Slippery Rock University, Pa. His wife, Shelly, is a daughter of Donald F. and Betty H. McConnell of Slippery Rock.
HONORS
Outstanding Unit Award
The Ohio Air National Guard's 200th Red Horse Squadron, Port Clinton, received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for the period Sept. 1, 2000 to Aug. 31, 2002. Also, several unit members received the Bronze Star for individual achievements in direct support of military operations involving conflict with an opposing armed force.

Back to Baghdad
Army Pfc. Matthew W. Murphy, recently home on leave, has returned to Baghdad, Iraq, where he is stationed with the 300th Military Police. Murphy, a 2000graduate of Youngstown Chaney High School, is a son of Robert and Carolyn Murphy and a brother of Patricia Murphy, all of Youngstown. His grandparents are Melvin and Nancy Weimer of Youngstown and Robert and Marilyn Murphy of Polk, Pa.
Sent to Mediterranean
Several area residents have been sent to the Mediterranean Sea aboard ship. They include:
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Shawn A. Smith, son of Beverly S. and Eddie L. Smith of Steubenville, assigned to the Spruance-class destroyer USS Thorn. Smith is a 1999 graduate of Edison High School of Richmond, Ohio.
Navy Fireman Kabir N. Aldeen, son of Sandra J. Aldeen of Youngstown, and Rasheed N. Aldeen of Washington, D.C., assigned to the USS Thorn. Aldeen is a 2001 graduate of Eastern Senior High School of Washington, D.C.
Navy Seaman Justin R. O'Hara, son of Angie M. and Michael D. O'Hara of Youngstown, assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Cole. O'Hara is a 1998 graduate of Youngstown Ursuline High School.
