YOUNGSTOWN -- About a year after the body of a murder victim was found in Mill Creek Park, an arrest has been made in the case.
Wade Shaw, 29, of Hudson Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with the aggravated murder of Archie Stanford, 44, of Parkwood Avenue, Youngstown, who was found dead Dec. 17, 2002. If convicted, Shaw faces a sentence of 20 years to life in prison.
Shaw was secretly indicted on the charge Thursday by a Mahoning County grand jury.
Acting on a tip to its crime tip hot line, the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Shaw around 3:15 p.m. at a house on Woodlawn Avenue, said Peter J. Elliott, U.S. marshal for the Northern District of Ohio. The marshal's office is a member of the task force, along with Youngstown police and the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department.
Criminal history
Shaw is being held without bond in Mahoning County Jail after being arraigned Friday in common pleas court, where he pleaded innocent. Shaw's criminal history includes arrests for aggravated trafficking, carrying a concealed weapon and assault, Elliott said.
Stanford's body was found during a routine check of the lower Bears Den parking lot at the park a year ago.
Stanford had gunshot wounds to his legs. Mill Creek police said at the time that it appeared as though the body was dumped in the park, and they didn't know how long the body had been there.
It was the park's first homicide in 4 1/2 years.
The task force's hot-line number is (866) 4-WANTED.
