PLANT OF THE WEEK

PLANT OF THE WEEK
Champagne poinsettia
Botanical name: Euphorbia pulcherrima "Champagne."
Attributes: This poinsettia features a distinctive apricot color with darker flecks on the bracts over dark green leaves. It is a very early cultivar, reaching full color by Thanksgiving. Vigorous growth, uniform habit and a long shelf life make Champagne one of the best designer poinsettias available.
Bloom color: Apricot-colored bracts.
Culture: Water when dry, removing any excess water from the foil wrapper. Place in moderate light and avoid placing the plant close to a heat register or cold draft. Purchase plants fresh from the greenhouse, making sure they have not faded from extended sleeving or shipping. Avoid plants that have been exposed to a cold, drafty door. The leaves will turn yellow and fall off three days later.
Display tips: Use poinsettias in holiday displays, adding paperwhites for fragrance. Add garland, pine cones and natural ornaments. Compost when bracts fade.
Cost: $8 to $85, depending on size, number of plants and decorations added. Available from local florists and nurseries.
