Falcons fire Reeves
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons fired Dan Reeves today, dismissing the sixth-winningest coach in NFL history with three games left in a disappointing season.
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will take over as head coach for the rest of the season.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank said he told Reeves on Tuesday he would be fired at the end of the season, but asked him to coach the final three games. Reeves asked to be let go immediately.
"We have made significant commitments to our fans and the community, and significant changes throughout other areas of the club," Blank said. "Now is the right time to set the course for our future in the coaching area, as well."
The 59-year-old Reeves is in his 23rd consecutive season as an NFL head coach, by far the longest tenure in the league. He had one year left on his contract.

NASCAR ponderspoints change
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- NASCAR is considering a radical change to its point system that would create a 10-race championship chase between the top 10 drivers in the standings.
The plan would lock in the top 10 drivers after the 26th race of the 2004 season. They would then compete over the final 10 races -- with their standings possibly being reset to zero -- for the Nextel Cup championship.
